Gypsum Wallboard Manufacturing Plant

North Carolina

CCC Group was contracted to construct the FGD (flue gas desulphurization; aka ‘synthetic gypsum’) reclaim and conveyor handling system, as well as erect and install the process mill building for a new gypsum wallboard manufacturing plant.

  • Intricate, cast-in-place concrete truck dump hopper and reclaim tunnel
  • Erection of a 30,000 SF pre-engineered building for waste board reclaim operations
  • Assembly and erection of approximately 1200 LF of FGD material handling conveyors and affiliated transfer towers
  • Erection of 1100 tons of structural steel for the process mill building
  • Assembly and installation of all the process equipment associated with the mill building, to include;
    • 1650 tons worth of material storage silos and feed bins
    • (7) pneumatic conveying transporters
    • 1000 LF of drag chain and screw conveyors
    • (3) process IMP mill systems, each with a with pre-heater, hammer mill, double cone classifier, cyclone collector and double duct collection system.
    • (1) Flash Drying Cage mill system to include drying column, cyclone collector, secondary dust collector, vent fan and connective duct work
    • 500 LF of large diameter exhaust ductwork

The plant was designed to produce up to 600 LF per minute.

  • Robotic positioners
  • Automated machining centers
  • Finishing equipment
Civil Scope
  • Site preparation
  • Building and equipment foundations
  • All underground utility installation
Electrical Scope
  • Incoming power and substation
  • Building utility power
  • Process equipment power & control wiring
Supervision
CCC was tasked with the supervision of local labor for all aspects of the mechanical, electrical, civil, and structural work. This also included supervising paving, substation installation, zero discharge water treatment system and the finish-out of the office building.

Other Tasks
In addition, CCC oversaw the safety, quality control, subcontract pre-qualification process, scheduling, budget estimating and complete contract administration.   Despite the owner’s market delays on the product and the addition of a $30M extrusion mill on the same property, which was executed by the on-site team, the original budget objectives were still met. Plus, the project received the owner’s highest safety award, in a market that has not traditionally placed a premium on safety.
